The Directorate of Local Bodies (DLB) is all set to impose one time Urban Development (UD) tax on all the property owners in the urban areas of the state of Rajasthan. This would abandon the difficult process of paying UD tax every year and residents can pay it for 99 years like lease money. According to sources, the notification is to be expected to come on Thursday. The tax will be imposed on houses, unutilized land except agricultural land and constructed areas in premises under the jurisdiction of all Municipalities, Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils. It has been announced under Section 104 of the Rajasthan Municipality Act, 1959.
The Congress is planning to oppose the imposition of this tax. The officials say that it would be levied on residential plots of more than 300 square yards, flats measuring over 1500 square feet and commercial plots of over 100 square yards. The tax will be applicable to budget, one, two and three star hotels, guest houses, all Central Govt properties used for commercial purposes as well as public sector undertakings, corporations and boards.
The officials believe that this move will benefit both the state government and residents. According to the senior official at DLB, the residents feel financial burden as the District Level Committee (DLC) rates on which the UD tax is calculated, increases every year. Sources say that 1.26 lakh people havn’t paid their UD taxes which amounts to Rs 700 crore. However 350 crore is just owed by 695 people, half of which are government institutions.
