Properties of three engineers of the irrigation department who were involved in the Gomti riverfront development project, was attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.
The accused engineers are Superintending engineer Roop Singh Yadav, Chief engineer S N Sharma and Assistant engineer Anil Yadav. Their polts have a total value of Rs 1 crore.
During investigation, the ED found incriminating documents mentioning amount and manner of payment of bribes to these engineers. They had used their wives’ financial profiles to launder the illegally earned money under the voluntary Undisclosed Income Declaration Scheme, 2016 of the Government of India.
A committee constituted under the retired Allahabad High Court Judge Alok Kumar Singh, had found irregularities in the project following which the Gomti Nagar Police had registered a case. Subsequently, in March 2018, the CBI had started investigation after the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh ordered an inquiry into the Gomti project and taking cognizance of that, the ED had under the PMLA filed a criminal case in this Rs. 1500 project scam.
The Gomti River project was inaugurated by then Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in November 2016. The project involved construction of a rubber dam, a stadium, an amphitheatre for 2,000 people, cycle and jogging tracks, a play area for children and a musical fountain.
