A prominent builder Anubhav Agarwal, managing director of RNA Corp, was prevented on June 19 from boarding a plane to Doha by immigration officials at the airport on the grounds of a circular lookout issued against him by the Economic Offences Wing of the local police.
After complaints of default on the transfer of apartments in a Kalina project, the EOW has recorded three cheating instances against Agarwal and RNA Corp.
The EOW has issued equivalent circular lookouts against 20 other entrepreneurs who, it suspects, may attempt to escape the territory, said a senior police officer.The policeman refused to reveal names, but said the list "involves many other builders who are being tried in cases of cheating and fraud."
Agarwal, who was to fly a Qatar Airways flight to Doha, had checked in his luggage and had been given a boarding pass, a police officer said. At the immigration counter, however, authorities stopped him and notified the police.
Builder Anubhav Agarwal, RNA Corp's managing director, was stopped at immigration at the town airport and was not permitted to board a plane to Doha on June 19. He was permitted to go home later, a police officer said. Agarwal refused that he was prevented from flying.
The event comes less than a month after the Serious Fraud Investigation Office and Enforcement Directorate stopped Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal and his wife from flying out of India following inquiries.
A magistrate's court convicted Agarwal to one year's imprisonment in May this year, levying a fine of Rs 14.6 crore in another case linked to cheque bouncing.He has lodged an appeal in a higher court against the order. In May, another builder, Yusuf Lakhdawala, accused of cheating and land grabbing and with a warning given against him, was caught attempting to fly from Ahmedabad airport to Dubai.
The second week of June, when he returned from France, Deven Mehta, a businessman accused of cheating Rs 10 crore from a NRI, was arrested at Mumbai International Airport.TLast Thursday, he also detained Amar Agarwal, director of Horseshoe Entertainment and Hospitality Company, when he came from France.He was charged with cheating his partner in a joint venture.
