The city Mayor Firhad Hakim now directed the demolition of extremely vulnerable building before monsoon as they are in the dilapidated condition and to save the lives of residents. The KMC building department officials have been facing intense resistance from tenants. It was assured buy Mayer that the tenants would be protected after evacuation.
As per Mayer’s order a survey by the building department was started of such buildings which were in vulnerable condition.In the survey, authority founded that some of the buildings in Central Kolkata were in such state that the lives of families were in danger and to vacate them is a challenging task so as to repair them.
The officials of KMC building department who generally look after the insecure buildings in large areas of Central Kolkata expressed helplessness as the tenants were resistance.
It was created by KMC official that they tried best to convince tenants to move out as the buildings where in dilapidated condition and my collapse during rains but it was of no use as they refused to leave the building and had no fear to lose their lives.
He further added that before 2 years same request was made to vacate the building and repair them so as to make them habitable but no response from the side of residents where given. The officials are more concerned about the buildings in extremely vulnerable condition after the incident of collapse of an old house on Bentinck Street.
List of insecure houses was made which are more in number on SN Banerjee road, Lenin Sarani,Elliot road, Bowbazar, Rafi Ahmed,Kidwai road and Bentinck Street.
An official of KMC stated that, they also requested when cyclone Phani hit Kolkata and also order regarding demolition must be passed byKMC.
As per KMC rules, municipal commissioner has the power that he can issue demolition order against highly dilapidated buildings in the interest of public interest this order is generally passed after the civic buildings department fails to vacate an insecure building after putting up notices of repair.
An official said that when the owners and tenants refused to take a prepares of extremely insecure portions, they need to vacate the building and demolished dangerous part.
