Kolkata Municipal Corporation with aim to cut out revenue defaulters has started a drive against major property tax defaulter in the City. The majority of defaulters on commercial properties as each of them cause tax worth rupees 10 or more to the civic body as per data by KMC revenue department officials.
A three-month drive to mop up over rupees hundred crore from the prime commercial properties is planned for which KMC department has chosen 10 words across Central and South Kolkata.
The drive has started on 18 June but no such results have come forward. The officials of the assessment department of KMC told that the civic body has moped up rupees 9 crore from a well-known party located on Middleton Street. The multi storey building comprising the property was rented to several private and government offices and the due was pending since decades. Promit Chatterjee, deputy assessor collector of KMC assessment department stated that all the defaulted properties will be raided in next 2 months and thus actions will be taken against tax defaulters.
KMC will follow specific procedure against the tax defaulter, firstly, the authority will put posters on the property, secondly they will send distress warrant asking to pay the due within a stipulated time and if failed to pay then finally will empower the civic body to auction the properties of the defaulter to release a dues.
The KMC has planned to send distress warrant to many properties in the central business district CBD including areas like U N Brahmachari Street, Camec street, Chowringhee street and Theatre road. Many properties in the prime commercial areas like Park Circus, Ballygunge, Elgin Road, Bhowanipore and areas located off Eastern metropolitan bypass will be raided as a part of the process.
