The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) is taking steps to regulate illegal buildings in Shahberi area. The authority stated that they will have to demolish those illegal buildings but it has not thrown light on the point of rehabilitation of people in those buildings or any compensation with regard to same.
GNIDA has decided to demolish five commercial buildings in the first phase and for that they asked for police backing.
An incident which took place last year in July where twin building collapsed causing death of 9 people triggered GNIDA to take this decision. It has come to the knowledge after the incident about the unauthorized construction and sale of properties in that area, all this was happening under the nose of agencies and also after court order has been passed. After the survey it was found out there are over thousand illegal building in the area of Shahberi itself.
Narendra Bhooshan, chief executive officer at GNIDA stated, “Shahberi was denotified in 2011 and three years later, the high court had ordered a status quo. This means any construction in the area is illegal and none of the buildings has their layout plans approved. All such illegal constructions will eventually have to be demolished,”
He added that GNIDA had asked for police back-up to embark on a demolition drive, but was yet to get any confirmation from the administration.
A suggestion report has been made by the district administration on the incident of twin building collapse giving two suggestions firstly to conduct demolition drive and secondly to drill holes in the ceiling or roof of all the floors of illegal buildings and make them uninhabitable.
BN Singh, District Magistrate stated while carrying on this activity care must be taken so that no collateral damage happen to other buildings in that area as the soil in Shahberi is loose. Also so there is no need to spend resources on the massive demolition drive because people there many a times break the seal and start to live again.
The DM has also sought a report on all GNIDA officials posted in the area since 2010 to fix responsibility. Echoing GNIDA’s decision, the district police chief has sent a report to the DM and said that all illegal structures in Shahberi should be demolished and the police would provide force for it.“We have sent a report stating that all illegal buildings in Shahberi should be demolished. We suggested that photographic evidence of these buildings should also be collected. Now that the election procedure and major festivals are over, we can provide police force whenever required,” as stated by Vaibhav Krishna, the Gautam Budh Nagar SSP.
