Tenants of Esplanade Mansion, a UNESCO heritage structure at Kala Goad, are to be forcibly evicted if they refuse to move out by May 30—a deadline set by the Supreme Court. MHADA has sought police protection to vacate the dilapidated structure between May 31 and June 3.Officials said the building has 193 tenanted units, of which only two have been vacated. The units include law offices, other commercial enterprises and residences.
A famous unit is the Army Restaurant, which, along with other shops, was served notices by the BMC on March 21 and 23 asking them to stop carrying out business as they were putting lives at risk. As per previous week report Supreme Court order a notice to vacate all tenants till 30 may. The 145 year old Esplanade mansion is A grade luxury hotel in the Bombay, also known as Watson’s hotel. Recently, an IIT panel said, "Repairs will be dangerous as many structural elements of the building are not rigidly connected to each other. Demolition will be economically and politically not viable. It will be very careful to demolish esplanade mansion." The residents get 15 days reprieve only.
