“Lawyers are allowed to protest in 'the rarest of the rare' cases, but the causes for their strikes are anything but rare”.
Home buyers in the state are in a fix. The ongoing lawyer’s strike in Kolkata, Howrah and other districts has crippled registration of properties for the past three weeks, jeopardizing home loan disbursal and putting deals that were on the brink of being finalised in peril. According to officials in the Registrar of Assurances (RA), Kolkata, against an average daily registration of 200 apartment in the office at 5 & 6 Government Place (North), only about 5% registrations have been happening since the lawyers went on an indefinite cease-work on April 24 to protest police high-handedness in Howrah, where some of their colleagues were allegedly assaulted by cops if they got into a fracas over parking with Howrah Municipal Corporation staff.
The West Bengal Housing Industry Regulatory Authority making registration mandatory for builders to collect more than 10% of property value. Total number of 3000 registrations is pending.
