Property taxes which are revised and collected regularly by the respective civic bodies, which are to be paid with due concern by the tax payers. In recent times at Dehradun, a major step is taken by Dehradun Municipal Corporation in regulating taxes which are paid by residents as well as commercial establishments. To increase demand for property taxes DMC has decided to set up camps in 129 slum areas of city where population is high covering about 30,000 houses. Collection will begin from first week of June.
City Mayor Sunil Uniyal Gama in meeting of tax officials held on Saturday stated, “DMC will declare the schedule of the camps and information regarding same will be conveyed to residents of the area before conducting camps so that residents will be able to attend the camps in large numbers.”
However, DMC pertinently ordered tax officials to cover all commercial establishments under ambit of these camps. Gama further added, “Generally tax collection works on the system of self declaration model where residents and commercial establishments declares the area engaged by them and thus pay respective amount of taxes but in this system lots of loopholes can be faced with, as details provided by them cannot be blindly relied on. As a result of this, DMC have decided to make a field survey under the supervision of tax officials where each commercial establishment in their designated zone will be surveyed and report will be presented within 30 days. Also, weekly survey will be looked after minutely by DMC.”
DMC will take actions against tax officials who fail to perform their duty. In any area where owner of commercial establishment is not paying taxes then tax officials in designated zone will be treated strictly.
“Officials designated under this task are ordered to come up with details of properties in newly added 40 wards under DMC. Nearly two months will be required to collect and compile the details, after this is done tax will be collected from the residents living in these wards.” as stated by Mayor Gama.
