Income tax officials raided the house of Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath’s close aide on Sunday on alleged charges of tax evasion, news agency ANI reported.Officials raided the house of in Vijay nagar, Indore at 3am on Sunday.The raids at the house of Praveen Kakkar, Kamal Nath’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD), were conducted by a team of 200 I-T officials and police officers in Vijay Nagar, Indore. The officials swooped down at Kakkar’s house at around am on Sunday morning.
The searches are linked to suspected movement of hawala money during the ongoing polls season and tax evasion, officials told PTI.The I-T department conducted searches in locations in Indore, Bhopal and Delhi. The locations were linked to Nath’s former OSD Kakkar, former adviser Rajendra Miglani and executives linked to his brother-in-law’s firm Moser Bayer and his nephew Ratul Puri’s company. Both Migalani and Kakkar had resigned days before the schedule of the Lok Sabha elections was announced.
Kakkar is a former Madhya Pradesh police officer, who was appointed OSD to Kamal Nath after the Congress won the elections in December 2018. Kakkar had earlier served as OSD to former Union minister KantilalBhuria and his family is associated with a number of businesses, including hospitality.
Congress reacted to the raids saying that the BJP government was targeting leaders from the Opposition for ‘political vendetta’.“The BJP government has been targeting opposition leaders across the country due to political enmity. Due to such act of political vendetta, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister (N Chandrababu Naidu) and DMK leader M K Stalin had to stage protest against the Centre,” said MP Congress’ media cell vice president Bhupendra Gupta.
