The veteran actor has finally got relief in the 2006 property dispute case. Yesterday, on Monday, Bombay High Court annulled an arbitration tribunal’s order that directed the former actor to give undertaking to secure property worth Rs 25 crore in a dispute with a builder over his Pali Hill property.
The builder had asked the actor to pay Rs 176 crore as damages to him for backing out of an agreement in 2006 for the redevelopment of his bungalow in Bandra, Mumbai. As per a report by The Times Of India, this is what the High Court judge Burgess Colabawalla said:
“Looking at it from any angle, the tribunal was wholly unjustified in directing Kumar to give an undertaking that he will not alienate or encumber or part with possession of the property which was the subject-matter of the arbitration to the extent of Rs 25 crore till the proceedings are concluded.”
The legendary actor landed in legal trouble in 2006 when he signed an agreement with Sharyans Developers to revamp his Pali Hill house. But in 2010, the developers handed over the deal to another builder named Prajita Developers. Since Dilip Kumar was not happy with the outcome, he backed out in 2015 after which Prajita Developers took the legal route and invoked the arbitration clause.
After hearings in the Bombay High Court, the case reached Supreme Court. It asked the veteran actor to give Rs 20 crore to the builders but the latter could take it only after handing over the Pali Hill property back to Dilip Kumar.
