Due to the increase in population in Mumbai, perhaps, there is no way to expand the city through lands. Recently, Rahul Shewale— Member of Parliament of Shiv Sena from Mumbai South-Central, wrote a letter to the Union Minister Mr Nitin Gadkari demanding the initiation of waterways services in Mumbai. The waterways service is sought from Trombay to Gateway of India. Traffic Jams, emission of harmful gases, congestion have always been a prime concern in Mumbai.
The Lok Sabha MP from Mumbai stated that waterways service was a good alternative for other transportation services. Waterway service would not only diminish the road traffic but also increase the level of users, and the same would have an optimistic effect on heavy rush in the suburban trains
Keeping in view a large number of commuters using private vehicles in Mumbai, there is a need to diminish the spread of harmful gases and pollution. The launch of waterway services by the central government would be a great boon in diminishing such harmful gases and pollution. The Sena MP told that people from Navi Mumbai could also avail the service, which would reduce traffic in Chembur, Mankhurd and Vashi toll gates. In addition to this, the Shiv Sena MP said that this would boost the employment opportunities of the locals belonging to that area.
