The Khadki Cantonment Board has recently forwarded the proposal, to terminate the leases of 55 properties, to the Principal Director Defence Estates (PDDE) of the Southern Command. Assessment has been done for each application related to the leases in the past two months.
The decision has been taken on account of the fact that the 55 properties enlisted have not renewed their leases for more than a few decades. This decision has been taken after repeated attempts at multiple rounds of meeting with citizens to create awareness about the lease renewal process which has however, not been able to yield desired results. A DGDE official has however, alleged that several cantonment boards did not pay much heed to lease renewal of the properties over the years stating that “This has resulted in piling up of more such cases. Had the chief executive officers consistently taken up lease renewal drives in the past, they would not have faced such a situation now. The CEOs need to be prompt in such matters.”
The data clarify that the boards could not renew 186 properties out of 256 in the past 11 months. Since the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has directed all cantonments and defence estates officers (DEOs) to apply ready reckoner(RR) rates as per the adjacent civic bodies while formulating lease charges of the properties, the rent amount pending is in Lakhs.
