Anayay Nivaran Kruti Samiti, is an NGO based in the city of Nashik. The NGO strongly condemned the hike in the property tax rates of ‘illegal’ property where the civic chief Radhakrishna Game experienced strong opposition. It was after the presentation of a memorandum mentioning the law and rules related to the increased tax rates. It was observed that the property tax rates were increased by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe from 300 to 1,350 percent. The tax was also imposed upon the agricultural land and on every inch of the land which itself posed great threat to the basic survival of the farmers.
“As per the value fixed, for one acre of farmland, property tax is Rs 1,37,000. Even after revision of this tax, the amount comes to Rs 68,500 per acre. If farmers commit suicide due to this tax rate, the state government will be responsible,” a delegation from the NGO had alleged.
“Once a decision is taken, it cannot be changed or cancelled by the new commissioner. Earlier carpet area was being considered for measurement of property but as per the new tax law, built up area would be considered. In the absence of built up area, 20 per cent additional construction on carpet area would be considered,” This way NGO had requested Radhakrishna Game to reduce the hike and become considerate towards the people by doing justice to them.
The NGO had mentioned that Abhishek Krishna, had proposed 36 per cent hike, which in a general body meeting of the corporation was quashed. After negotiation the hike was reduced to 18 per cent.. It was mentioned that the civic commissioner is bound to act by the orders passed.
“We have to see what is feasible and how this issue can be sorted. I am studying the property tax issue,” Game said.
