Three months after the Punjab and Haryana high court directed Faridkot district authorities to pay Rs 90 lakh compensation to a rape survivor and her kin after auctioning the convict’s property, the aggrieved family finally received the money on Monday. Faridkot revenue authorities handed over three cheques amounting to Rs 90 lakh — Rs 50 lakh to the survivor and Rs 20 lakh each to her parents. The money was raised after the district Red Cross Society purchased 3.5 acres of agricultural land owned by convict Nishan Singh for Rs 91 lakh in an open auction on November 13.
Nishan is serving a life sentence for abducting and raping the girl. Nishan and his accomplices had abducted the survivor, then a minor, on June 25, 2012 and raped her. However, she managed to escape on July 27, 2012. He abducted her again on September 24, 2012 and even assaulted her parents.
