The Centre has approved 6.28 lakh homes for the urban poor in 11 states under the Pradhan MantriAwasYojana. The Central Government sanctioned this on the 26th of September, 2018. The entire funding for the housing is to be covered under the Pradhan MantriAwas Yojana. The approval was obtained in a meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee. Uttar Pradesh will receive around 2.34 lakh housing units. Andhra Pradesh will receive around 1.4. This will be followed by Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Gujarat. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu has been sanctioned around 20000 houses. The urban ministry also decided to releasev486.87 crores to Kerala due to the heavy floods that took a lead in the State.
The ministry has also advised Kerala Government that it should submit it’s proposals for the housing under the scheme as soon as possible. These would include the flood affected people eligible under the scheme. The government has set a target and a laudable one of constructing 1 crore houses in the country under the scheme. The entire duration may be of seven years, at most. Last month the Committee also sanctioned the construction of 1.12 lakh affordable houses for the poor in eight states. This comes at a time when homelessness has emerged as an urban phenomenon. The proportion has increased with large scale migration to the urban cities for work purposes. Understanding the socialist structure of the democracy, it calls for operative measures to be taken by the government.
