The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund that is chaired by Sonia Gandhi and housed in Teen Murti Estate, has written to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs refuting charges that it had not been authorised to use its present offices. The ministry had sent an eviction notice to the JNMF to leave the space by September 24. The fund’s administrative secretary wrote to the ministry that the notice be withdrawn and that JNMF has been recognised as a property of Nehru Museum Memorial Library since 1967. The notice stated that JNMF has spent its own fund and that right cannot be revoked. The Secretary of the fund stated that the fund has maintained a symbiotic relationship with the library for 51 years.
Nehru’s diary, manuscripts, private newspapers and several articles written by him are retained by the library. The Centre however thinks that a separate space is needed for a new building. The society in which the JNMF is registered had through the Central Government order requested a portion occupied by JNMF be vacated. The notice stated further that JNMF occupies the land of Teen Murti Estate without any authorisation or contractual relationship between the Centre and JNMF or between the Society and JNMF.
