Committee To Be Erected In West Bengal To Address The Issue Of Bridge Maintenance.

West Bengal recently witnessed three bridge collapses in a span of one month. An agitated Mamata Banerjee directed the State Government to construct a committee to look into the construction and maintenance of bridges. Se sent a directive from Italy to the State Government to set up a corporation to keep an eye on the construction, health review and maintenance of the bridges. It should be noted here that the state has a number of bridges maintained by did departments like Public Works Department, Urban Development Department, Irrigation Department and also a number of ZilaParishads but unfortunately they lack the required expertise in bridge maintenance.

The Chief Minister after coming back from Europe will hold a meeting with the officials, the expert engineers and the main heads of the Committee that is envisaged by the State. It shall then be finalised. The State properties in the form of bridges are a relief to the people who want to avoid traffic. The collapse of three bridges in a row, not to mention the earlier ones that happened a few months back, took the state in shock. Using public properties like flyovers that ensure a faster connect, has now been put under severe scrutiny and scepticism.
