The Maharashtra State Government issued a notification giving local self government bodies the right to decide on the fee to be charged in order to regulate unauthorised constructions in civic limits. This notification was issued by the fate government following the demand from many local authorities to reduce the compounding of fees. The notification is significant because the members of the Pine Municipal Corporation are contemplating for a reduction of charges by about 80%. This was approved by the city improvement committee. This Proposal is under the consideration of PMC and is expected to have a smooth sailing after the state’s notification.
PMC demanded this reduction. The state government had given approval to the scheme of compounding unauthorised constructions. Constructions carried out before December 31, 2015 are eligible for this scheme. The scheme did not get a positive response in Pune. There were only owners of 40 properties who wanted to get the constructions regularised. Though this move would be a relief to those having unauthorised properties, the civic activists claimed this to be unjust. Only reduction of charges is unlikely to help if other norms are not followed. Regularising illegal properties, as had been put forth by a member of the citizen’s forum would encourage more illegal or unauthorised constructions to happen.
