The Supreme has banned all construction activities in Maharashtra, UP , Madhya Pradesh, Uttarkhand and Chandigarh after they failed to comply with the court’s order to come up with a policy of solid waste management. The bench headed by Justice Lokurimposed a fine of 3 lakhs on each of the States and an additional of 5 lakhs on the State of Maharashtra. The court said that it’s sad that health sanitation and hygiene are dealt so casually. If the states have their minds on them they must frame Ethernet policy accordingly. The attitude of the states is not expected.
The developers are worried because they had just recovered from the shocks of note ban and new housing law. Projects are lagging behind deadlines. This matter started after a seven year old boy died of dengue in Delhi where he was denied treatment by five private hospitals. The distraught parents had committed suicide. The President of National Real Estate Development Council , NiranjanHiranandanisaid that a blanket ban will not be useful and would adversely affect those who are seeking homes. He said that perhaps it would have been better if the court had barred new construction but allowed the old one to continue. The ban is expected to hurt cement and steel industries too. If the ban operates for as long as there is an implemented policy on waste many the states, then it would be a problem. Larger states are likely to suffer from the ban on steel and infrastructure making.
Among the steel producers, the producers of long products will see more impact said BL Agarwal, Managing Director of Godawari and Ispat Ltd.
