Tukaram Mundhe, the chief of the municipal corporation of Nashik, has suddenly introduced a drastic change in the tax levied on properties. According to the latest notification of the Nashik Municipal Corporation, Property tax will be reduced by half of what it earlier was.
Before the common man celebrates this rare occasion where the appointed official has acted favorably with regard to citizens, the circumstances leading to this unprecedented decline in taxes must be scrutinized. This state was release by Mundhe just 2 days prior to his political trial. The Chief has disgruntled many a local politician and people by increasing the property tax almost sevenfold just after his appointment. This obvious scheme just served the purpose of filling the coffers of the BJP controlled Municipal Corporation. The collected revenue, one can safely assume, wouldn't have seen the light of day in order to better the district. The mogive behind this sudden move is purely to appease the people and the politicians who have pushed for a no confidence motion against Mundhe, so that he may not be kicked out of his influential post. This cheap move comes as no surprise to anybody who is familiar with the dicey history of the politician. Mundhe has been transferred 10 time in 10 years in his tenure as a BJP representative.
Worth noting is the fact that even after the slashing of the property tax, the gross amount a property owning party must pay is more than what was levied prior to Mundhe’s appointment in the Municipal Office.
