The latest on the National Green Tribunal- there has been a substitute appointed in place of Justice SJ Vazifdar who served as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court. The substitute being Tarun Agarwal, former chief justice of Meghalaya to lead the committee that will be discussing the matter of reopening the Vedanta's controversy of the satellite copper plant. The law bench lead by NGT chairperson Justice AK Goel had on August 20 appointed Justice Vazifdar as the head of the three-member panel also comprising representatives of the Central Pollution Control Board and the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate change.
However in an unfortunate turn of events CJ Tarun Agarwal backed out of the panel by saying that there were a few personal issues that had come up to which the NGT said We substitute Justice SJ Vazifdar by Justice Tarun Agrawal, former Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court and former Judge of Allahabad High Court,” ordered the National Green Tribunal, they also added to their statement by saying “Pending the finalization of remuneration by the Chief Secretary of the State of Tamil Nadu, the Central Pollution Control Board will provide immediate logistic support and organize the visit of Justice Tarun Agrawal, Chairman of the Committee and other members or to the venue of hearing."
