Preservation of historic monuments have never been carried out with diligence in India, and it is truly shameful for a country to witness it's cultural history deteriorate and and do nothing. In a backdrop of people clamouring for the retrieval of national treasures from our former colonial rulers, one could easily argue that India is notorious for it's lack of attention to the historic artifacts we do posses.
The Taj Mahal is one such monument which has fallen victim to negligence and illiteracy of our citizens and lawmakers. In the case of preservation of Taj Mahal, which was initiated by a PIL on 1997, courtesy of famous environmental activist MC Mehta the Supreme Court has asked for a progress report for the same. The results have dismayed the bench consisting of Justices Madan B Lokur, S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta.
The head of the vision project, which was launched to preserve the monument by curbing air pollution in the area around which the monument is situated, Meenakshi Dhote, was asked by the court to speed up her situational report. Any additional help or expert reviews would be provided by the court should she require them.
Lastly, the UP government has been asked for a response to the age old question whether Agra would be deemed as a heritage city. A representative of the state government has stated that the administration would have an answer within a month.
