Government is working on a law which affects the NRI husbands who don’t respond to court summons. This came in the light of an increase in cases of domestic violence. This bill has been collaborated by Ministry of External Affairs, Women and Child Development, Home Affairs and Law and Justice.
This decision was taken around 7 months after a woman from Nashik filed for domestic violence and Divorce against her Husband from Sydney and the husband failed to show up to the court even after repeated issuance of summons. The woman was forced by her husband to all the domestic chores due to which she applied for divorce in January 2018 against her husband who did not appear to court.
Then she approached the Women’s Commission which held four hearings. Court keeps issuing summons and there is no response due to which this action had to be taken. Around a third of all Indian married women have experienced domestic violence. The government has made it mandatory for NRIs to register their marriages with the ministry, keeping this in mind.
