The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the civic bodies to resume sealing and demolishing unauthorized shops and encroachments in the National Capital and gave the centre two weeks to frame rules to crack down on builders, contractors who have violated municipal by-laws while constructing residential complexes.
The bench comprising of Justice BM Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta issued the order to resume sealing.Officers participating in the sealing drive face threats by mobs and residents. SC has asked police to provide adequate safety and security to such teams. The court has also asked civic agencies to stop construction of buildings with illegal activity or irregularities.
"The court's direction to blacklist builders was right. Every project should be mandatory registered and monitored. Officers who are supposed to keep check on constructions should be held accountable and answerable if irregularities are found," said Getambar Anand, chairman of Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) .
Sealing drives have taken place in Delhi's prominent markets including Defence Colony, South Extension, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar. This has led to mass protest by traders.
