Homebuyers’ body in West Bengal on Thursday has demanded Real Estate (Regulation & Development) Act 2016 to be implemented and that Housing & Industrial Regulation act 2017 (HIRA), West Bengal’s state level legislation be repealed.
“We don’t want HIRA, we don’t want anything less than centrally governed RERA. We demand that HIRA should be repealed as it makes RERA redundant,” Abhay Upadhyay, president of Forum for People’s Collective Efforts(FPCE).
FPCE have stated that they have written to president Ram Nath Kovind and to prime minister Narendra Modi on the issue. Homebuyers demands that HIRA should be repealed as it defeats the provisions of centrally enacted RERA.
West Bengal is the only state in the country that has not accepted RERA and so they enacted HIRA. The Central Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA) came into effect on May 1, 2017, exactly a year after it was passed by the Parliament.
