The farmers of Banwaribas on Tuesday refused to attend the meeting called by the administration to register their protest against "an inadequate rate of twice the circle rate."
This protest was followed by the protest by farmers of Ramnagar. The meeting was held to seek their consent for the development of Jewar International Airport project along with 165km Yamuna Expressway. The Gautam Budh Nagar administration on Monday started the process of seeking consent from farmers in order to acquire their land.
"We do not want to protest at all infact we want the airport project as it will support the development in our region. We just want 4times the existing circle rates for our lands," said Devandra Sharma, a resident of Banwaribas village.
"Our villages were considered rural areas, the UP government in May 2018, abolished village panchayats in our village thereby including our village in urban areas, so they would not need to pay four times the circle rate. But we are firm that we will not give our land at rates less than ?3600 per sq metre," said Trilok Sharma, former village head of Banwaribas
