On Wednesday, a draft report of Public Accounts Commiittee (PAC) has asked defence ministry to conduct a comprehensive survey of its esatates and take actions against officials for shoddy management resulting in outstanding rent of Rs 838 crores.
The draft report called for a strict action who failed to prevent encroachment on their land and to renew their leases and thereby encouraging commercial use of their land. The arrers have accrued ranging from 4- 46years.
The Directorate General of Defence Estates (DGDE) is the country’s biggest landholder, possessing 1.76million acres of land.
PAC has asked ministry to finalize a leasing policy within 3months. The report titled “Improper Management” has highlighted several irregularities which were also reported by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports, but no efforts was made by ministry to correct them.
The ex-lesses were in occupation on the land illegally, even after their lease was expired.
