The Supreme Court of India on Monday ordered private hospitals which have been given land at subsidized rates, to provide free treatment facility to the poor sections of society.
A bench led by Justice Arun Mishra and S Abdul Nazeer held that any violation of the said directive will be treated as contempt of court’s order.
The order states that any hospital in Delhi which have been given land at concessional prices, to provide 10% reservation in wards and 25% reservation in out-patient clinics for economically weaker sections (EWS).
Any resistance by hospitals on imposing reasonable restrictions on condition for treatment of poor patients would lead to the cancellation of the lease of the hospital.
This judgment affects four hospitals- Moolchand, St Stephen’s , Sitaram Bharatia and Rockland.
