The Delhi High Court on Saturday directed the government of India to compensate 26 Non- Residential Indians (NRIs) who applied for plots in India in 1978 under the central government scheme. HC has asked centre to award compensation of Rs. 11,22,000 to each of 26 NRIs.
The scheme was launched by Ministry of works and housing, to provide housing within India to L&Do and all NRIs who do not have any residential plots in their name or in name of any immediate family member. Under this scheme they were entitled to apply for allotment of house.
The land for allocation was located in Badarpur-Mehrauli Road New Delhi. However in 1983, the government scrapped this scheme leave those who have applied for lands under this scheme stranded.
“The decision was taken in public interest and cannot provide and escape to the government of legal consequences. The government had breached the contract,” Justice Pratibha M Singh said.
