In a welcome step to check corruption and malpractices, the Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) will establish a vigilance cell. The news was given by the mayor, Naveen Jain, who further clarified that the wing will not only deal with corrupt practices but also the disciplinary proceedings of the officials.
He said” Work on the formation of a vigilance wing is in process. The main aim is to put a tab on corruption in the civic body and secure public interest. Vigilance officers will look into all complaints regarding malpractices, look for evidence in cases and submit a fact-finding report. These reports will be acted on in time and errant officials will be pulled up”.
A vigilance officer will have the right to check official documents and question an official or any other employee in case of an irregularity. Members of the wing may also check the quality of construction works or that of any other project. They will also be authorized to check the movement of unauthorized elements inside AMC premises. According to Mr. Naveen Jain, retired army officials will be preferred as vigilance officers.
It is submitted that this indeed is a step in the right direction as the vigilance wings in collaboration with Central Vigilance Commission will be instrumental in achieving transparency in government departments.
