In a joint collaboration between the police and municipal authorities to demolish the illegal property of bootleggers, a property belonging to a woman bootlegger, Sunita Batange was demolished on the morning of 4th May around 11 am in Chharanagar. Despite facing resistance from locals and a few other hindrances, the police were able to manage the situation due to the presence of a huge staff as a result of the joint cooperation. The illegal property had been built by her from the proceeds of her illegal liquor business. This was one of the first incidents involving joint cooperation between the municipal authorities and police to demolish the properties.
The decision to demolish the illegal properties had come after the state’s top cop Shivanand Jha had directed senior officers to monitor investigations into liquor seizures worth more than Rs 20 lakhs. He had further ordered officers to explore the areas of organized crime, forgery and money laundering so as to enable the enforcement directorate to invoke the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against such people. A list of around 50 bootleggers was prepared including Anil Bhuriyo of Kubernagar and Raju Gendi, where such demolishing operations are being carried out by the police after receiving confirmed surveys from the municipal authorities. An intelligence report about bootleggers using luxury buses from Rajasthan to traffic liquor has been received by the police and operations are being planned to check these buses and seize the convicts red-handed.
