Property disputes have continued to destroy households since eternity. Another such dispute was witnessed in Bhuj area of Gujarat when an elder brother set ablaze the house and family of his younger brother amidst the celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr. The elder brother Haji Yusuf Shah (75), a retired government employee, set aflame the subject matter of the dispute; the family property worth Rs. 25 lakhs along with the family of his younger brother Mohammed Ibrahim Shah (67) at around 1:30 A.M. in the night when everyone was asleep. While Ibrahim’s wife Sherbano (65) and younger daughter Zulekha (43) were charred to death he is on the verge of survival around 90% of his body burned. His elder daughter Sabera, though alive also suffered around 25% serious burn injuries.
The dispute over the property had been going on between the brothers since a very long time. It had even reached the court, where the matter has been in a pending state since the last nine years. Despite residing in the same compound, Ibrahim had occupied the bigger house with his family while Yusuf was residing in a small room which further aggravated his frustration. On the petrifying night of 18th June, Yusuf went to his brother’s residence near Paris Bakery and sprinkled inflammable liquid over the asleep persons as well as on the walls of the residence. With a mere throw of a lighted matchstick, the entire place was in flames. Zulekha and Sherbano who were inside the house succumbed to the 95% of the burn injuries while Sabera and Ibrahim survived as they were outside. In the process, Yusuf himself suffered burn injuries. Neighbors rushed immediately at the shrieks of the burning persons and all them including Yusuf were rushed to the GK General Hospital.
Taking Sabera’s statements as evidence, Yusuf has been booked for murder and attempt to murder by the police.
