The activists of an organization which protects waqf properties in Gujarat have approached the Gujarat High Court, seeking action against the railway authorities after they started a demolition drive on a land belonging to a shrine in Navsari district despite the fact that a lower court order was in the favour of the shrine.
The dispute had been taken to the court when the railway had allegedly wanted to encroach the shrine’s land for a freight corridor. After hearing the arguments, the lower court had upheld the shrine’s right over the land and ordered the railways to stop any work. The railways authority had subsequently appealed. But, before that the railways started the demolition, in clear contempt of the lower court’s order, on June 5. The complainants stressed on the need for protecting the land, which is visited by thousands of pilgrims and devotees.
