Sanjay Mittal, a property dealer based in Ambala committed suicide on May 23. The 14-page suicide note that police found stated that he committed suicide due to facing losses in his real-estate business. Ambala has witnessed 5 similar suicides of property dealers.
Following this, the Ambala Property Consultant Association (APCA) staged a protest against the Municipal Corporation and tehsil offices of the Ambala Cantonment, claiming that the maladministration at these government offices was one of the reasons behind the slump of real-estate business in Ambala. The President of APCA, Ashok Goyal stated that the tehsil office does not register the property, claiming that the property falls under unauthorised areas. However, these unauthorised properties are subject to tax under the Municipal Corporation. The non-registration of the property leaves the dealer in a lurch, as he fails to get the required registration documents and that is why, according to the APCA, the businessmen are placed in an extremely precarious position. The APCA has submitted a list of demands to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Office. The SDM has promised to set up a committee to address the grievances and subsequently, engage with the government to implement effective measures to curb these problems.
