The Uttar Pradesh Government has topped the list of all states of the country under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin scheme (PMAY G) by building seven lakh dwelling units. Mr. Mahendra Singh, Minister of State (independent charge) rural development in a press conference informed that the government achieved 85% of its target by constructing 7,71,073 houses in nine months where 47,000 units were built in Sitapur and nearly 7,000 in Varanasi under the scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 November, 2016.
The states were asked to achieve the consolidated target of 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 in the last financial year where Madhya Pradesh with 47% claimed the second position while Chhattisgarh with 45% claimed third position. Adding further, Mr. Singh said the government is motivated by the success and seek funds from Centre to construct over 11 lakh of housing units in coming year. He also informed about the scheme approved by the state cabinet called Mukhya Mantri Awas Yojana where the beneficiaries would get Rs. 1.3 lakh compared to Rs. 1.2 lakh provided under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
